The Bio-Oil Skin Test

Bio-Oil is not a new product for me. I’ve heard of it for years and also used it quite frequently a couple of years ago. However, somewhere along the way I forgot all about it until I recently heard it being mentioned by my trainer as she was advising someone else to use it for their stretch marks due to her changing physique.

Due to some recent weight loss I did notice that my chest area seemed to be looking a-little-less-than-perky. Needless to say this is not such a great look when you’re only in your late 20’s! So when hearing about Bio-Oil again I decided to put it to the test.

According to the packaging, this product claims to provide treatment for:

  • Scarring;
  • Stretch Marks;
  • Uneven Skin Tone;
  • Aging Skin;
  • Dehydrated Skin.

It’s key ingredients are PurCellin oil, vitamins A and E, as well as natural plant oils such as Calendula, Lavendar, Rosemary and Chamomile. It is also hypoallergenic meaning it can be used on sensitive skin.

Packaging: A see-through cylinder shaped container available in either 60ml, 125ml or 200ml.

Scent: I really like the smell of Bio-Oil. Can’t put my finger on what it is exactly, but it does have an essential oil quality smell to it.

Cost: Naturally costs for these will vary, however generally they range around €10 for 60ml, €15 for 125ml and €18 for 200ml. The value for money for these all depends on why you are using the product as this affects the frequency and amount (dryness for the whole body vs. stretch marks on hips and chest only).

The Test: In this case, I decided to use Bio-Oil on sagging skin that was also dehydrated (due to the heat, air-conditioning and self-tanning) and in areas prone to stretch marks – the breasts, chest and hips.

I didn’t feel that the rest of my body needed Bio-Oil, as my regular body moisturiser took care of this well. However, I did want to give a bit more attention and deeper moisture to these areas.

Using twice a day after a shower, first thing in the morning and before going to bed, I used a medium sized drop (about the size of a large coin) and massaged gently in circular motions in both these areas. I noticed an improvement straight away but it was about after the second week that I really saw major differences.

My skin was so much softer, yet at the same time a lot more supple and much firmer. What a relief! My skin got the moisture it finally needed.

Verdict: I like this a lot! However I do not feel that this needs to be used over the whole body, unless your skin is extremely dry. Using on targeted areas is very effective and also better cost-wise as it can be quite expensive if using it for the whole body. Personally, I would not use this on the face as it can be a little bit greasy and the scent could irritate some skin types. If using this on the face, avoid using it on very sensitive acne.

It blends in effortlessly and isn’t sticky. Super hydrating and smells lovely. Great product that I will definitely re-purchase and highly recommended for anyone whose body is going through drastic changes, be it due to puberty, weight fluctuations or pregnancy. This will help it keep its elasticity and looking young and healthy.
